FAQ and TIPS

How Much do I need?

To calculate your requirements in cubic metres first measure the area you wish to cover. Then multiply the length x width x 0.1. This gives you the cubic metre quantity required.

For example for a garden bed that is 10 metres by 3 metres the calculation is: 10 x 3 x 0.1 = 3 cubic metres.

When to Mulch your Garden

We recommend mulching twice a year. Once prior to summer to keep spring weeds down and to lock in that much needed moisture over summer, and then again in Autumn to support your garden through winter.

What's in our Garden Mulch?

Our mulch is made from a mix of foliage and chipped trees. We only accept arborist felled trees and exclude any noxious weeds or plants. Producing our premium product takes time, with plenty of fresh water and regular turning to produce a high quality, nutrient rich garden mulch product. No animal products, dyes or bleaches.

How to Apply Garden Mulch

When planting into mulched beds ensure that you clear any mulch away from the base of the new plants (about 1 inch is good). This protects young plants until they've become established.

We recommend a depth of 0.1 to ensure good coverage. Rake your mulch out for even distribution.

Why Mulch?

Mulch does many things for your garden:

  • protects the plant root system from sun & wind
  • holds in moisture and saves watering
  • gives a barrier between frost and root systems
  • naturally suppresses unwanted weeds
  • provides a slow release of nutrients
  • gives protection from rain, minimising wash away
  • effective ground cover for difficult areas

2 Questions to Ask Before you Buy Garden Mulch

Not all mulch is created equal, before you take up that great price, ask these questions and if in doubt, ask if you can view the product before delivery.

  1. How well aged is the product? Green and off the back of the truck is not going to be good for your garden.
  2. What is the source of the raw product? You don't want any noxious weeds sneaking in.

How to Protect Young Plants

When planting young plants and seedlings, keep the garden mulch clear of the base of the plant. The nutrients in mulch can burn young stems. Simply scrape mulch back from the base of each young plant.
